Jacks ~ Remember When

Onesies, Twosies, Threesies  -- do you remember playing jacks?

I was going through a drawer the other day .... no, not cleaning it out, merely going through it ....
why on earth would I clean out a drawer anyway?!!  If you clean out a drawer, there't nothing fun in it to go through ....

Anyway, I came across this little bag of jacks. They were mine and I hung onto them for reasons unknown -- although I did love to play the game! I guess the ball bounced away a long time ago!

Obviously old, just look at the bag! From ancient times for sure!
I wrote "Jax" all over it to identify its contents lest anyone (my brother...) think it was just a bag to be tossed out ....

They were red, blue and silver, four of each color,
although it's hard to tell now!
And made of steel -- I tried it and they stick to a magnet!

I remember playing Jacks for hours on our front porch (screened in, wood floor, perfect playing area). And if none of my friends could come out to play, it was a game that was just as fun played alone.  We went through the typical turns of picking up one at a time, then two at a time, then three and so on. Picking up all ten at the same time was always a challenge for little hands!

There were lots of variations and made up games -- I remember one where we had to hold the picked up jacks on the back of one hand while bouncing the ball and picking up with the other hand -- all before the ball bounced twice! You had to concentrate -- it was like patting your head with one hand and rubbing your tummy with the other at the same time!

When you threw them and a couple landed piggy-back like this, it meant something ....
but for the life of me I can't remember what!

Did you play jacks when you were a kid?

♥♥♥ I'm linking up my jacks to Alphabe-Thursday over at Miss Jenny's where we are studying the letter "J."

I did! I played jacks as a kid! And that little rubber ball? Is there any dust in the bottom of the bag?? Well, that was once the ball.

too uncoordinated to play jacks, but have always admired those who did! that bag reminds me of the yellow gum (that looked like mined gold -- in bits and pieces) we bought at the corner store. perfect for storing jacks.

What a fun find! This is why we can't clean out our drawers...so we can find treasures like this :)

This brings back memories! My brother and I played with jacks like the ones in your photos. We played Tiddly-Winks, too--do you remember that?

I used to play jacks too but I didn't know there was meanings with how they landed. Or maybe I did and I've forgot! :)

What fun! My sister and I played jacks and after my daughter was old enough, the same jacks came back into play. I just found them recently - so, the next time the grandgirls arrive, I will be ready!
Was it an extra turn if they were piggy back? haha - guess I had better go check out the 'rules' if the girls and I are going to play!

I did play jax, on my grandparents porch. Now, I say play in a very 'generous' way. Jax, it would seem, were the first hint of the totally uncoordinated person I am. But, I did try! Thanks for sharing another great childhood memory.

I for sure remember playing jacks! I'd spend hours trying to get better, but I never was any good. I think you didn't want them to land on each other as it made it more difficult especially when just picking up the one at a time. However, if you and your friends were like mine - we made up rules.

We called Piggybacked jax 'kissies' and the player could rethrow them if she wanted, or leave them touching.

Thanks for good memories.

I remember jacks!! My mom and I used to play for hours on our kitchen floor. :)

OH, I forgot to say... piggy backs (the way we played but like most old games there are probably 1000 versions). We still counted them as one each so if you were on 3's, you could grab the piggy back (=2) and one more. If you only need one, you still have to grab one jack of the piggy back pile and not move the rest. It's hard, but doable.

I remember jacks! We had actual, physical toys back in the day. Today's kids have virtual toys.

I still have my jacks and ball from my childhood. I tried to teach my daughter but she wasn't too interested in playing with them.
I only have one of my marbles left though.~Ames

Yes, I played Jacks - but for the life of me, I can't remember any of the rules or scoring.

What a treasure! Love the JAX bag.
My little brother and I played jacks. Hand-eye coordination was never my strong suit, so he usually won.

How fun! I like the look of the bag--my mind went immediately to -- how can I use that in a canvas or journal.
It is a sickness.

and around the world--bounce the ball, pick up the jacks, and pass your hand in a circle around the ball before catching it.
