The Saga of Can Openers and Cats

A couple of nights ago hubby fixed chicken and wanted oven fried potato chunks with it. And broccoli. Now, mind you, we have a pretty good system -- he cooks and I chop and clean up. Well, I just wasn't in the mood to chop much and if we had both oven fries and broccoli, I would be chopping more than I cared to chop. Besides I have a love / hate relationship with broccoli -- it's one of my favorite veggies but I get tired of it quickly (very quickly...).

So out with the broccoli and in with a can of baked beans!! Now I only had to chop one thing and open the other (which is my other kitchen job -- hubby hates to use the can opener which is a hand-held one).

Wait! I think I have too many kitchen jobs!!

But I digress... the real subject of this post would be the bestest cat boy ever.... Oliver!

As I am chopping and can opening, in runs Oliver at a gallop...

He starts that winding around your legs thing that cats do. Around and around, in and out, tail hooking around my legs, light brushes with the fur. I'm thinking What on earth does this silly cat want? I check and there's plenty of food in his bowl... plenty of water. He only gets treats when I say "Treat!" and has never asked for them. Hmmm... what on earth?

And then it hits me. It's the can opener! Which is weird since it's a hand-held one and doesn't make noise. But noise enough for a cat apparently, because I see no reason why he would want beans! And hubby hadn't started the chicken....

So, back up a few weeks.... the only time I give Oliver any people food is when we have tuna.

I give him a little of the tuna water to lap up straight from the can (my can opener leaves the edges so they could only cut softened butter) and maybe a teeny tiny bit of tuna. Oliver always runs in when I open a tuna can so that's understandable. He doesn't run in when I open a can of green beans or black eyed peas or something. But baked beans?? Apparently so!

So all that winding around my legs stuff? My guess is that he remembered the can opener and was hoping for a tidbit of tuna!

Smart kitty.

Oliver says, Is that all there is???
and what happened to my ears??
Oh the indignity of it all...

Ha!! That's so funny. My aunt's dog is always in the kitchen lurking around for food. No matter what we're making, there she is, hoping for one of us to drop something. Haha.

They are smart. The little kitten I just found in my pasture came on a dead run when she heard the top pop on the can of cat food.

Oliver, you are so handsome! We get wet food every day so we can tell the difference between a can of it being opened and a can of something else. We can also hear a treat bag opening from any where in the house!

Ooh, clever kitty! Sammy runs in to the kitchen whenever I open the fridge! haha
Also, I don't like chopping. I'm hoping to get one of those kitchen gadgets that chops vegetables :)

Bubby dog had to eat canned food in the last couple of years of his life and he LOVED it. Any time we'd use the can opener on anything, he'd run into the kitchen and freak out. Animals are so smart! :)

Ha.Ha. Cats are so clever! Tux races down the stairs when he hears me open the bag of cat treats. They must have incredibly good hearing!

funny thing about tuna. I've always given our dogs the tuna cans, with a little bit of the tuna. They've always grabbed the can from my hand! {:-D

Oliver is beautiful and a very smart cat, too! Twiggy is the same way with the can opener and for the same reason. What I can't figure out is how does Twiggy here me open my yogurt?

My cats go nuts for tuna - they will raid the bin for the old tine given half a chance too!

Hi Sarah,

Oliver certainly knows how to let you know exactly what he likes. Not that cat food in his bowl, but TUNA!

Isn’t it fun finding blues to share? Thanks for playing today.

Happy Blue Monday!

never asked for a treat?! Oliver must have amazing self control!
My Oliver gets tuna once a month and it's opening the cabinet and banging a couple bowls together that gets him. He also loves nutritional yeast (kitty crack) which I put on popcorn. so if he hears popcorn popping he comes running.
Kitties are so amusing!
Did Oliver try the beans?

Splendid Little Stars said...

It was fun reading the other comments. Oliver also perks up if we say the word "tuna."

Now that is one smart cat! The word 'TREAT' must be universal for pets as mine knows exactly what that is about. Oliver's reaction to the can opener reminds me of my dog when I open a drawer in the kitchen...her treats are in a bottom drawer. Fun post....Happy Blue Monday!

What a clever cat!

I think they all know the can opener.

Have you ever tried oven roasting your broccoli? It's delicious like that!

But I would always take the baked beans!

Thanks for a clever link for the letter C.

A+
