Purple Butterfly for Karon

I love to do cross-stitch. I love the outlining and embroidery at the end that just makes the stitching pop! So one way to combine this love with helping others is through Love Quilts -- a group of very talented and hard working and loving women who stitch and sew cross-stitch blocks into quilts for kids who have life-long or life-threatening illnesses.

This is my latest -- a butterfly for Karon. She loves purple, and butterflies.

Next, I will be stitching for Tylynn who loves rainbows, the sun, clouds, stars, planets and the moon! So mine will be a bright rainbow and sun over a cloud that says "Follow Your Dreams." I'll add some pics when I get some done -- haven't even started it yet!

And, just so you can see an example of a finished quilt, here's one that I contributed to from earlier this year. It was for Shane, who likes the great outdoors.

This is what I stitched -- ducks in flight sampler

Finished quilt!

And, now, have a perfectly beautiful, purple butterfly kind of day!

Me Want Cookies!! Sesame Street Treasury

I used to watch Sesame Street with my kids (who are adults now!) and got a big kick out of it. I really liked Mr. Snuffleupagus and Cookie Monster! And Grover now graces a shelf in my office.

So it was a terrific surprise when I found my chocolate chip (Cookie Monster) cookies in this treasury!

Hoowdy Folks! It's State Fair Time! - Wednesday Wanderings and the Shops Found Along the Way

Howdy Folks! says Big Tex who greets all State Fair goers in Dallas TX. A big, low voice, drawing out that Howdy --  Hooww-dee Folks. If you're from Texas, you'd recognize it anywhere. And that shirt! Every so often they change it -- it takes miles of fabric and miles of denim for his jeans! (He is really, really tall!!)

Big Tex by Texas Eagle.

So today, in celebration of the opening of the Texas State Fair, we're shopping Etsy for state fair stuff!

Absolutely a must is the Texas Star ferris wheel! (For me, this is a no-no -- heights are not for me!) It's supposed to be the tallest ferris wheel anywhere -- you know what they say -- everything's bigger in Texas!!
Dallas State Fair Ferris Wheel by Evans Photography.

My hubby says that the only reason I go to the fair is to see all the quilts and cross-stitch. I deny it, but he's right! I love to look at all the handcrafts because I know the time and love that goes into making each one. I can appreciate the intricate stitches and the beautiful designs. Well, this one caught my eye and it won an Honorable Mention at this year's New York State Fair! And I love quilts that have applique designs. You really should visit this shop -- she has three other quilts that have won ribbons in the same fair!
Quilted Wall Hanging For the Birds by Starry Home Crafts.

And what Fair would be complete without canned pickles? How about watermelon rind pickles? You can always find some interesting canned goodies at the fair! I'll bet this seller has won some blue ribbons 'cause everything in her shop is just down-home goodness! And I love what she put for "favorite materials" on her profile page: "anything you can put in a Ball canning jar"!!

I always love the animal exhibits. I love the baby farm animals and the big old pigs. Some of those pigs are downright HUGE!! Now these two piggies are just plain cute and would definitely win the Blue Ribbon!

Thanks for coming with me to the Etsy State Fair! Now here's a little fact you may not know about the Texas State Fair...

All the competitions at the Texas State Fair are fun and I imagine it would be really rewarding to earn a ribbon, but the craziest must surely be the Big Tex Choice Awards. It started about five years ago with Fried Ice Cream (delicious)! Last year it was Fried Butter! This year's entries include Fried Lemonade and Fried Frozen Margaritas (can you imagine?) and, of course, Fried Beer!!! How about Fried Chocolate?

You'll just have to take a trip to Texas to find out which one wins and taste for yourself!

And the Winner Is.......♥ Noli ♥

I recently entered a giveaway hosted by Mrs. Nespy's Frugal World (a button is over there on my side bar--->) for a cloth napkin set from Happikins. And I won!! Or, rather, Noli won because they will be for her!

Noli uses cloth napkins at home and also at my house, so it is only fitting that she should use them at preschool too! I don't know which set I will receive, but I know that she will love either one! They are made of cotton and are a generous 12" x 12" size -- just right for little kid laps!

Noli might let you peek inside her new (and very cool fall-colored-plaid-with-its-own-water-bottle-pouch) lunchbox to see her new napkins. Maybe...

Be sure to visit Mrs. Nespy's soon -- she hosts giveaways all the time!!  And, of course, go over to Happikins for some napkin love!

If You See a Fairy Ring - Wednesday Wanderings and the Shops Found Along the Way

There's a special book that Noli and I like to read, "If You See a Fairy Ring." Really sweet and finely detailed pictures, and lovely poetry. When we are outside, sometimes we see evidence of fairies, but we never disturb it so that the fairies will come to that place again. Sometimes we find special things that fairies have left us to discover, like rocks that sparkle or wonderful things that you just know is from a fairy. Like this origami folded paper left in the driveway, definitely colored by a fairy who, like Noli, loves purple.

Today, with Fairy Noli in mind, I'm strolling around Etsy looking for fairy rings and fairy homes and maybe I'll even find a wee fairy herself... Come join me, but be very quiet and tread softly.

In order to find where the fairies sleep, you must go through their tiny door, usually found leading into a tree and sometimes protected by gnomes. (Although gnomes sleep a lot, so we should be able to sneak in.) Look out in your garden, you may discover one. This fairy door is by Nothin' But Wood and it really opens!

This little fairy blends right in with her surroundings in your garden. They would rather keep their presence a secret (except sometimes little children can see them) and of course, they love to sit sweetly on mushrooms. Emerald Fairy by Magic Threads Dolls.

Fairies seem to like sleeping in flowers or under mushrooms, but there are some who prefer their own little home sweet home. They can decorate it as they like, and not worry about some human taking their home to put in a vase or a salad. And these are the cutest fairy homes on the block! Fairy Houses by Suzannes Pottery Farm.

When I think of fairies, this is what I picture. So very, very sweet. She looks so beautiful and serene.
There are also some really lovely fairy notecards in this shop that you just must see! Dogwood Fairy 8x10 by Berrys Beanies.

A fairy named Primrose lives here and she planted the flowers that grow in her yard. Being fairy-sized, it is tiny and fits in your hand so all the detail is amazing! What a sweet little house -- wish Primrose would come outside so we can tell her.  Primrose Fairys Mushroom House by Cricket Moon.

Write your garden fairy a teeny tiny letter and put it in her mailbox -- I'll bet she leaves you a surprise! Have a peek at this shop -- there are other cute fairy furnishings there (including a, ahem, potty...)!!
Fairy Furniture Mailbox by Fairy Furnishings.

And, of course, any little girl who dances after fairies would love her own fairy dress! In Noli's book there are woodland fairies dressed just like this. I love this dress.... Peasant Fairy Costume by The Frolicking Fairy.

If you see a fairy ring
In a field of grass,
Very lightly step around,
Tiptoe as you pass;
Last night fairies frolicked there,
And they're sleeping somewhere near.
If you see a tiny fay
Lying fast asleep,
Shut your eyes and run away,
Do not stay or peep;
And be sure you never tell,
Or you'll break a fairy spell.

New Stuff in the Attic!

Just sharing some new goodies in Magnolia's Attic...  I've been estate/garage saleing (can that possibly be a word? If not, it should be!) lately and have a bunch of things to list. But photos first and that always seems to take a while!

Speaking of photos, I've got a great place for a stationary light box -- I'll show you when I get it perfected and... wait for it... TAKE PHOTOS!!

Anyway, enjoy the newest listings!

Sweet little tatted doily -- tiny, only 2ish inches across in a 3x3 wooden frame

50s Glass Carafe for your coffee or tea -- or syrup for your pancakes!

Love to cook? Then this is the cookbook for you!! Great 70s kitch recipes -- like Tuna-Cheese Souffle' Sandwiches and Chip 'n Cheese Wieners :) Oh my! But there's regular, everyday type recipes too...

Silver metal filigree napkin rings -- aren't they pretty? They'd make a really lovely statement on any table!

That's it for now! Thanks for looking!

September 1 Holidays - Wednesday Wanderings and the Shops Found Along the Way

Would you believe that September 1 has seven holidays!! I'm going to find something on Etsy to represent each holiday! Sound like fun?? Think I can find 'em? Well, come along with me and we'll see!

Chicken Boy's Day ~ Chicken Boy was a sign atop a restaurant of the same name in Los Angeles -- a restaurant that specialized in (can you guess?) deep fried chicken! Chicken Boy had a chicken head and a man's body and stood a walloping 22 feet tall!! Want to read more about him? go here Chicken Boy: The True Story.

This is the cutest chicken boy ever!! What a cute Halloween costume this would make -- just keep him off the roof! Yellow Feather Baby Chick Halloween Costume by DIP Designs.

Bison-Ten-Yell Day ~ It's the bicentennial birthday of Bison-Ten-Yell, imaginary inventor of a series of ten battle yells that were signals. His system is still used today by football players.

Yeah, football fans yell all right. And sometimes you need a sign to warn others...

Emma M. Nutt Day ~ One ringy dingy... (remember Lily Tomlin as the telephone operator?) Old Emma became the first female telephone operator on Sept. 1, 1878  and shares her special day with -- guess who -- Lily Tomlin who is celebrating her 71st birthday today!!

Everybody's calling at once! Wouldn't you just love this fun job...

Building and Code Staff Appreciation Day ~ Have you hugged your building inspector today?

These playhouses slip over card tables and are just about the cutest things around! What a sweet home for your little one -- oh, the tea parties to be attended!!

Calendar Adjustment Day ~ Good grief  - why can't they just leave the calendar alone? In 1751, Britain issued a “Gregorian Correction” for the next year, eliminating September 3 – September 13. This was supposed to get the Gregorian and Lunar calendars on the same page (hehe)  This also set January 1 as the official New Year’s Day. Until then it had been March 25. (Ridiculous - New Year's in March. Whoever heard of such a thing?)

September's puppy wants to come in! Is that just the sweetest look on his face? I love all the designs for 2011 -- kitties, puppies, flowers -- each can also be framed as a charming print! (I particularly love August since it's a magnolia!!)   September by Celia Flock Studio.

National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day ~ What rhymes with orange or purple? Or penguin, for that matter? This holiday celebrates words that do not rhyme with any other words. No cheating! Only English words allowed!

This set of folded note cards says it all.

Toy Tips Executive Toy Test Day ~ The corporate Muckity Mucks play with toys, supposedly to learn to be creative in the workplace. I think it's just to take the day off...

Can't you just see guys in suits playing Twister!! This is a 60s version -- love the cartoon  box!

Whew!! Found them all!!  Enjoy all your holidays today - just think, you get to play and rhyme and yell and eat chicken and check your calendar. Not to mention talking on the telephone while hugging your building inspector!

♥♥♥ One more thing! Did you notice that I have a new look for my blog? Basically the same but cleaner lines, a little wider -- still cutesy. I switched the Etsy Mini's for the Craft Cult scrolling widgets over there on the right top. I think I like them better -- more fun! What do you think? ♥♥♥
