Shirley Temple Curls

Haircut!

Noli asked, "who do I look like?"

"Shirley Temple,"  mom says

"Who's that?  Everyone says that."

So mom pulls up Wikipedia and Noli wanted to read it.

According to mom, "She read the first paragraph in twenty minutes like an explorer hacking through the jungle with fierce determination. A lot of the words I helped her with, like "autobiographer" and "retire" -- they brought an adamant "I KNOW" when I tried to define them."

Do you remember Shirley Temple?

photo, business, show

and her curls?

We were in an antique store the other day and I saw a Shirley Temple doll -- dress in her red polka dot dress from "Stand Up and Cheer." I showed Noli and she said -- "I KNOW. I see her ALL THE TIME!"
Little smarty pants.....

I didn't have a Shirley Temple doll, but I had Shirley Temple paper dolls! I can remember carefully cutting out her frilly dresses. And I watched all her movies on TV after I was grown up -- and thoroughly enjoyed them!

I just might have to check out NetFlix and see if I can find her movies and watch them again.....

Ragamuffins!

Did you know there was a breed of cats known as RagaMuffins?
Well, me neither!!

According to Wikipedia, you can prepare to pay upwards of $1000 for a pedigreed RagaMuffin kitten!

But, having my own (human) ragamuffins, I have certainly shelled out much, much more than $1000 on their upkeep, feeding, and housing ....

Which leads me to another definition of a ragamuffin that is "a ragged, unkempt person, especially a child"  or, "a dirty, shabbily clothed child; an urchin."  Now that's the kind of ragamuffin I'm talkin' about!

And apparently they have run rampant in my family ......

Ragamuffin Adam
my son at about age two -- about as ragamuffin as you can get!
Right down to the overalls ....

my brother when he was probably around three -- but this was back in the late 30s! Photographers used to bring ponies to your house to sell photos to moms....
that pony looks like he's a bit tired of kids sitting on his back
Ragamuffin Pony!!!

I've got one of myself on a pony too ....

But I'm not nearly as ragamuffin as my bother!!
I'm just downright cute!

I can be a full-fledged ragamuffin too
sitting on my rock

And if you want REAL ragamuffins, look at my hubby, circa mid-50s

He's the one on your right
Don't they look like kids from Our Gang aka The Little Rascals?!

Here are those two rascals again.....
this time standing on an old bed frame -- with springs!
They just let the kids play on anything back then!!

This is as close as I could get for my daughter --
she was just not a ragamuffin at heart

But she does have those overalls!!

Noli's not much of a ragamuffin either.....

But she sure has fashion sense!!!

Red Strawberries!

I've been working on a special order lately -- lots of different foods for a wee one's Christmas. One of her favorites to eat is strawberries.... so, of course, they will be included in my order.

Well I've made strawberries for my shop, but wanted to use a pattern that would produce a bit larger strawberry that would be safer for a little one.

So, I started increasing and increasing.... and produced a HUGE strawberry!! It turned out too big for little hands -- it's 4 inches long and 3 inches wide -- she'd have to hold it in both hands!!

So now it's a pin cushion!!  I think it will be happy in its pin cushion life--
or as a cute decoration on the kitchen table!

Now back to the drawing board for a strawberry that's just a little bit larger than my original ones!!

The Winner!!

Last week I blogged about a giveaway from Heather of iHartFelt which was her celebration of reaching over 150 followers on her Facebook fan page. Heather is one of my teamies on the Blogging Business Artisans Etsy team.

Well, guess who won!

Yours truly!!

I am thrilled to have won these cutie owls! I plan to use them as a start to my Halloween decorations -- cute and fun stuff just for Noli.

Last year, she informed me that I should decorate for Halloween and wondered why I didn't. "Mommy decorates for Halloween -- why don't you?"  Because I gave all my Halloween stuff to Mommy!!

About the only thing I kept was a ceramic black cat and a bag I painted -- both cute for Noli. So these sweet owls will be a great start for a new Halloween collection that will please Miss Noli.  Hmmm, I wonder what she's going to be for Halloween this year!

Thanks again to Heather!
I am so pleased to have won!

Heather has more cute Halloween stuffies in her shop! Here are a couple that I think are just too spooky cute!!

This black cat is so cute with his big green eyes!

and I love Mr. Bat with his very cool vampire fangs!

Be watching out for another giveaway from Heather in November!

Quirky Sandwiches!!

Have you ever eaten a pineapple sandwich?
How about a banana sandwich?

Those are two of my most favorite sandwiches to eat for lunch (and they are very quick to fix when you suddenly get the hungries, LOL!)

The secret to a pineapple sandwich is chilled pineapples. I just put the can in the fridge when I unpack the grocery bags -- then they're ready to go when I crave one of these yummy sandwiches!

First you smear the bread (whole wheat for me) with a liberal amount of mayonnaise (actually, I use salad dressing like Miracle Whip, but I call it all mayonnaise -- kinda like Kleenex even when you use the store brand ... but I digress)

Anyway, then you get a pineapple slice out of the can, wiggle it a bit to get off excess liquid, tear it so it's not a circle anymore and put it on one of the slices. Repeat with another slice, fitting it into the first slice. (There's an art to this, you see ...)

Now you're ready to go .... unless .....

Like me, you like FOUR slices of pineapple!!
If two are good, four are better!

Add some corn chips (there's something about the sweet and salty combo) and a glass of milk

Hint:  "diaper" it with a paper towel 'cause there's no way all the juice wiggled off!!
(Yeah, that's a bite taken out -- I couldn't wait!!)

Now, a banana sandwich is made the same way as a pineapple sandwich except, of course, you use a banana rather than pineapple. (This said because some might think they should use both pineapple and banana on the same sandwich, and that might be a bit of sandwich overload ...)

Slice the peeled (again, for those people, certainly not you) banana in half across its mid-section, slice those lengthwise into four or so pieces, and layer on the mayonnaised (Miracle Whipped) bread. Stack as high as you please!!

Here's one Noli made up!  Chex sandwiches!!

Peanut butter between Chex cereal!

Noli doesn't like pineapple or banana sandwiches, but she can eat these things all day!!
(original blog post here)

And if those bits of quirkiness between two slices of bread (or Chex) aren't enough for you, check this out!!

a Peanut Butter and JellyFish Sandwich!!
Is that priceless or what?!!!
It's from the Etsy shop Sappy Moose Tree and, although this has been sold, she's got lots of other quirky goodies in her shop!

I know, I know, it's kind of a stretch -- but I didn't feel like lugging out the Quilts and snapping pics!
Another time, I promise!

Tag! You're It!!

What fun!

I've been tagged by Heather at A Mom, a Kid, and Art to participate in a fun blogger game that's making the rounds. The *chosen* ones get to answer some questions so the rest of us can get to know them better ....  and then the taggee's get to be the taggers and ask their own questions!

Is that about as clear as mud?

playground daze blog button quote about kindergarten
So, once you're tagged, you follow the rules:
you know, like in kindergarten  :p
  1. You must post the rules
  2. Answer the questions the tagger set for you
  3. Create 8 new questions for the people you will tag
  4. Tag 8 bloggers with a link to your post
  5. Let them know they've been tagged

Here are Heather's thought provoking and maybe embarrassing questions, and my answers .....

If you could visit anywhere in the world, regardless of cost, where would it be and why?
Hmmm, I think Holland, in the springtime when the tulips are in bloom. I visited my brother when he lived in Holland many years ago but I just missed the tulips! We saw many amazing sights as we visited various countries, but I always wanted to see those tulips!

If you could eat only one kind of food for a month what would it be?
Ice cream!!! Especially Moo-len-ium Crunch and Pralines and Cream from Blue Bell and  Mint Chocolate Chip from Braum's. After all, if I'm eating it for a month, I'd have to have a few different tastes on the menu!

What did you want to be when you were a little kid and why?
I don't really remember -- it was back in the dark ages when I was a kid!! But probably a mother -- there weren't many choices for girls back then, and my mom was a mother, after all ....

What's a bad habit you should give up?
Ice cream!!!  I've eaten it for a month, remember? It's definitely a habit by now -- and it does call to me in the night .... for real ....

Is there a celebrity or famous person that you are really sick of hearing about and who is it?
Whichever one is currently doing something stupid at the moment! But I'm really sick of Katy and Tom, Justin Beiber's driving habits, and Prince Harry's photo shoot!

What's your favorite author or book?
Too many to list! But I always grab the newest by Debbie Macomber (her Blossom Street series), Jennifer Chiaverini (Elm Creek Quilt novels), and Beverly Lewis (her Amish novels).

What's the worst piece of advice you've been given and followed?
Back in my early working days, I interviewed for a job and was not excited about it when I got the offer -- but on the advice of a good friend, I took the job. Bad idea! Turned out to be the most boring job in the universe and I knew right away that it just wouldn't work out. It was hard talking to them about it and giving notice but it was a lesson learned!

What is a funny or weird fact about yourself that not many people know?
Do you remember spiral perms? When they were all the rage in the late 80s and early 90s, my daughter just HAD to have one. Her hair was already pretty curly -- and long -- but she wouldn't take no for an answer. Plus she begged and pleaded for me to have one too -- another head of already rather curly hair. I don't know what got into me, but I caved! It took about two years for that perm to let loose of my hair! This pic is of Stephanie and her spiral perm, sitting on my uncle's shoulders and being "bunny-earred" by her brother! That perm was cute on her ..... but on me -- not so much! (I conveniently have no pic of MY spiral perm!!)

Now, here are MY questions for those hapless bloggers I have tagged ....

1.  If you had to quit doing what you do now, what would you do?
2.  What's your favorite junk food?
3.  If you could be any animal, which one would it be, and why?
4.  Who is your favorite singer of all time and which song?
5.  What was your nickname as a child? Did you like or hate it?
6.  Which reality TV show do you watch without fail? ('cause I know you do ....)
7.  Carnival rides -- love 'em, or scream like a girl?
8.  If there was one thing you could change about yourself, what would it be? (c'mon, fess up!)

And the hapless bloggers I have chosen ....

I'm So Vintage
Storybeader
Tapestry316
Cathy Kennedy's Blog
Have a Daily Cup of Mrs. Olson
Little Susie Homemaker
One Loopy Knitter
Like Gramma's House

He he! Hope ya'll have a good time with this fun little game!!
And I hope the rest of you, dear readers, will follow the links and see what they said!!

Paper Hat Stack!

As we got out of the car, I spotted the pink plastic bag on the driveway. It has advertisements in it and goes straight to the recycling bin. Noli says "Bring it in -- I can make something out of that paper!"

So in it goes and she takes the papers out and sets to work ....

Do you know how to make paper hats? .... No, I say.
Well, I'll show you how, she says!
I wasn't smart enough to grab my camera at this point, but she -- very precisely -- showed me how to fold it.

 A paper hat stack!

Who's behind those paper hats?
It's a mystery ....

We must model from the back too

Mommy gets in on the fun!
Noli loves her purple sunglasses!

The next day .... Silliness on Mommy's porch
Mommy's friends wear Noli's hats ....
