You Cannot Escape, Oh Evil Vine

Oh, evil poison ivy vine, you cannot defeat me, nor can you escape MY noxious poison. Muahahaha!

Last week I wrote about the Dreadful, Despicable and Downright Disagreeable poison ivy vine that liked me so much that it left an itchy gift behind. So this week there is an update...

I gave in and got a prescription from the doctor to relieve the itching -- and I can see a definite improvement! When it wears off though, I'm scratching worse than a dog with fleas. (I would said "cat with fleas" but Oliver might take offense at that -- even though we are careful that he doesn't have the dreaded fleas) Anyway, I'm getting off track here (easily accomplished if you are me).

So, I went online for instruction on how to get rid of it in a safe manner... not wanting to use a commercial product that would harm the outside kitties or the ground cover for that matter. I found this recipe and IT'S WORKING!!

3 cups vinegar (regular white vinegar)
1/2 cup table salt
1 Tbsp Dawn dishwashing detergent (the use of Dawn and not another brand is recommended -- Dawn has special stick-to-it-ness powers -- and use regular blue Dawn)

Pour the vinegar into a spray bottle, add the salt, and mix until dissolved.
Then add the Dawn

"Stream" spray on the leaves and straight onto the stem at ground level. Be careful and don't spray anything you want to keep -- this stuff works!

Proof:

Before at the fence

After at the fence

Before at the shed

After at the shed

The "after" shots were taken after two treatments. Pretty good, huh? We tried it on a couple of weeds and the sticker vine that is creeping onto our back fence -- works there too!

Maybe I should spray it on my itchies..... hmmmm, maybe not!!  No, definitely not!!

But, Mr. Evil Vine....
I WIN!
heh heh heh

Take that you evil poison ivy! I will definitely keep your recipe for weed killing -- the kids could use it as they have a similar problem on their fence. Thanks!!

We have that evil stuff! I am not too allergic, but learned this spring that pulling blackberry brambles and poison ivy gloveless out of my flowerbeds was not a good idea for even me! Every where a thorn scratched me the poison ivy got "in". My daughter does not even have to touch it. She is extremely allergic. She used to get it from the dog who ran through it in the woods and then brushed against her! Last summer she had it so bad she had to get a steroid shot..poor baby! I use that vinegar mix too. not as immediate as Roundup but not toxic either!

Glad you were able to defeat it! Sometimes weeds and vines can be so vicious.

it is a pretty vine! Glad you won out! Every time I THINK of poison ivy, my hands get tingling! I got smeo kind of reaction to something on the side of my house. It wasn't itchy, but a numbing feeling. I thought it was poison ivy at first, but my hands just sort of swelled up!

Yay to victory over the vine! No more nasty itchiness for you :)

That's great that the natural recipe is working on the vine. And I'm glad to hear your meds are working too!

That's really interesting. I've seen variations of this recipe online. I even bought the recommended epsom salts. I've yet to make the mixture myself, though. (Some said a stronger acetic acid is needed.)
Good to know this is working. I'll pass your post on to my daughter who has a plethora of poison ivy in her yard.

Ewww.

Poison ivy.

I remember it well.

And it is absolutely evil.

I don't think it grows here in Arizona! Or at least I haven't encountered it yet.

Thanks for an interesting link for the letter E.

A+

Wow, that mixture really does work! My significant other is actually a caretaker of a cemetery, and there are a few poison ivy vines scattered throughout. I'll have to pass on this recipe to him and see if he's interested!
